Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Mass General Brigham (MGB) have announced significant gifts that will shape the future of cancer care in Boston. The competition between these two institutions is intensifying, with Dana-Farber receiving the largest single gift in its history, a $1.68 billion donation for a new 300-bed cancer hospital. This gift surpasses the previous record set by the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon, which raised $78 million last year. The donors, Josh and Anita Bekenstein and the Jonathan and Jeannie Lavine family, have chosen to keep the donation amount confidential.
The hospital is set to be built on the site of the Joslin Diabetes Center in the Longwood Medical Area, as part of a partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This project has sparked a debate about the allocation of resources in cancer care. While Dana-Farber and its donors celebrate the opportunity to enhance cancer treatment, some voices, like that of Alan Sager, a professor of health policy and management, argue for a more equitable distribution of resources. In contrast, MGB has received a $35 million gift from Irving Oil to establish a cancer care institute at its flagship hospitals. This institute will complement ongoing construction and renovations, including the $1.9 billion, 2-million-square-foot Phillip and Susan Ragon Building, which is expected to open in two phases in 2027 and 2030. Irving Oil's gift will create two spaces within the building, one for urgent cancer care and another as a 'healing garden'.
The rivalry between MGB and Beth Israel Lahey Health, the state's second-largest hospital system, adds another layer of complexity to this landscape.
