China-Netherlands Chip Dispute: Unraveling the Impact on Global Supply Chains (2025)

A global chip crisis has emerged, and it's all because of a dispute between Amsterdam and Beijing. But here's where it gets controversial: the Netherlands is facing backlash from China over its seizure of chipmaker Nexperia, which has caused a ripple effect across industries.

Nexperia, a Chinese-owned company based in the Netherlands, produces billions of essential chips for cars and electronics. However, a disagreement over technology transfers has led to a supply chain bottleneck, impacting car manufacturers and causing disruptions in production.

The Chinese government has issued a stern warning to the Netherlands, urging them to "stop interfering" in Nexperia's affairs. This statement contradicts the progress reported by the Hague, Brussels, and Nexperia themselves, leaving carmakers worried about their supply chains.

The Dutch government's decision to take control of Nexperia on September 30 was based on concerns that Wingtech, the Chinese owner, planned to move European production to China, posing a threat to European economic security. In response, China halted exports of Nexperia's finished chips, mostly packaged in China, creating further supply issues.

"Today, our system means we have zero autonomy as an industry," said Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis, at a sector meeting in Paris. He highlighted the Nexperia chip crisis and the rare earth crisis earlier this year as examples of Europe's supply chain vulnerabilities.

The European Commission has expressed relief that China is engaging with EU companies to restore a partial flow of chips, buying time to find a long-term solution. Nexperia, for its part, is focused on restoring supplies and seeking a swift resolution.

Ola Kaellenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, believes an understanding between China, Europe, and the US is within reach. However, the situation remains complex, and the spokesperson for Wingtech has not commented on the matter.

This chip dispute has highlighted the delicate balance of global supply chains and the potential impact on industries worldwide. It raises questions about economic security, technological sovereignty, and the future of international trade.
