Hidden vacancies are a pressing issue affecting families and the job market, and the government is being urged to take action. The Union Network International-Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) has highlighted the detrimental impact of concealed and fragmented job vacancies on youth unemployment, with young Malaysians graduating into a challenging job market. The president of UNI-MLC, Shafie BP Mammal, emphasizes that the problem lies not in a lack of talent but in the lack of visibility of job vacancies. He argues that young people should not have to guess where the jobs are, as vacancies are currently scattered across private portals, WhatsApp groups, and closed networks, with some never being advertised at all. This situation is unfair and contributes to the high unemployment rates among young Malaysians, with 9.9% of those aged 15 to 24 and 6.2% of those aged 15 to 30 currently out of work. Shafie points out that these numbers reflect the struggles families are facing, as parents witness their children's unsuccessful job applications and uncertainty about missed opportunities. To address this issue, a proposed amendment to the Employment Insurance System Act 2017 (Act 800) introduces Section 45F, which would mandate employers to notify vacancies on the government's MYFutureJobs portal. This measure aims to create a centralized reference point, ensuring that every graduate knows where job opportunities are available. Shafie explains that while employers can continue to use platforms like JobStreet or LinkedIn, MYFutureJobs will serve as the baseline for job visibility, protecting young workers. This reform aligns with global standards, as the International Labour Organization advocates for transparent vacancy information as a fundamental aspect of worker protection. UNI-MLC expresses full support for this principle, emphasizing the need for an active, fair, and open labor system. The organization is committed to working with authorities and employers to ensure a smooth transition, stating that the amendment is not intended to burden employers but rather to ensure that Malaysian families are not denied opportunities due to hidden vacancies. Shafie urges the government to stay the course and not succumb to calls for a moratorium, as the long-term benefits for workers are clear and compelling. He asserts that a modern labor system should prioritize visible and fair vacancies, rather than hidden and selective ones.
