Ohio State's impressive track record of grooming NFL quarterbacks has drawn another talented prospect, Justyn Martin, to join the Buckeyes. With a dream of playing in the NFL, Martin believes Ohio State can be his stepping stone to achieving this goal.
While Martin won't be starting for Ohio State in 2026, he's looking forward to the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback role in 2027. This is made possible by the medical hardship waiver he's eligible for due to a season-ending injury during his time at Maryland.
But here's where it gets interesting: Martin is joining a team with a returning Heisman Trophy finalist, Julian Sayin, who is expected to enter the NFL draft after next season. So, Martin is prepared to bide his time and learn from the best, including head coach Ryan Day and quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler.
"I believe in their ability to develop me into the quarterback I aspire to be," Martin shared, highlighting the key reason for his decision to transfer.
Ohio State's history of producing NFL quarterbacks is undeniable, with five of their last starting quarterbacks drafted, including three first-round picks. This track record was a significant factor for Martin, who aims to follow in their footsteps.
"They consistently produce exceptional quarterbacks, and I want to be one of the next success stories at Ohio State," Martin said.
Martin's connection with Fessler goes back to 2024 when Fessler was hired by UCLA. Fessler's transition to Ohio State after Chip Kelly's move impressed Martin, showcasing Fessler's resilience and coaching abilities.
"Fessler's ability to adapt and elevate the performance of quarterbacks is a testament to his coaching skills," Martin noted.
Martin's own journey has been filled with resilience, facing injuries and competition from future NFL quarterbacks during his time at UCLA and Maryland. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to pursue his NFL dream.
"My college experience hasn't been what I envisioned, but I believe the adversity has made me stronger both as a player and as a person," Martin reflected.
With experience playing at two other Big Ten schools, Martin believes he's well-prepared for the Ohio State environment.
"I've faced these teams before, so I bring that knowledge to the team. I'm confident in my ability to learn and adapt to Ohio State's offense," he said.
As for his role on the 2026 depth chart, it's still uncertain. However, Martin is ready to compete and prove himself, approaching every practice as an opportunity.
"Every day in college is an audition for something bigger. I plan to give it my all and see where it takes me," Martin stated.
Martin is also eager to mentor the younger quarterbacks and contribute significantly to the team.
"I'll do my best every day, and I'm excited to have the chance to play and make an impact," he added.
Off the field, Martin is looking forward to engaging with the Columbus community, exploring career opportunities, and practicing his faith.
"I want to immerse myself in the city, find internships, and connect with a church. Religion is a priority for me, and I plan to do a lot more than just football in Columbus," Martin shared.
While Ohio State showed slight interest in Martin during his high school recruitment, he didn't receive an offer then. However, he's grateful for the opportunity now and excited to be a part of the Buckeye family.
"Becoming a Buckeye is surreal. I'm thankful and appreciative of the chance to be on this team," Martin concluded.
