Russia's Inevitable Collapse: Putin's Regime Under Pressure (2026)

Russia's future hangs in the balance as the nation teeters on the edge of disintegration, with the Kremlin's power potentially unraveling.

In an exclusive interview with the Express, Nastya Rodionova, a Russian writer and former political journalist, predicts the downfall of Vladimir Putin's regime. She believes that Russia, in its current form, is akin to a grotesque Frankenstein's monster, destined to implode due to its inherent contradictions.

Rodionova, who fled Russia with her family after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, recalls the moment she knew she had to leave her comfortable life in Moscow. Her children were being taught pro-war propaganda in school, claiming Russia was saving Ukrainians from Nazism. This prompted Rodionova to take action, fearing imprisonment if she spoke out.

As a journalist, she witnessed the political protests of 2011, sparked by Putin's decision to run for a third presidential term. However, she was disappointed by the protesters' lack of resilience when faced with the Kremlin's crackdown. The middle class's political failure during this period left a lasting impression.

A glimmer of hope emerged with the youth-led protests inspired by Alexey Navalny's anti-corruption campaign, but these too fizzled out under repressive laws. Despite these setbacks, Rodionova remains convinced that Putin's Russia will self-destruct.

She compares Russia to a Frankenstein's monster, a patchwork of disparate parts brought to life by a madman's will. Rodionova argues that attempts to 're-educate the monster' and instill European values are futile and worrying. Instead, she suggests that dismantling Russia back into its constituent parts may be the only solution, allowing these regions to thrive independently.

The vast and diverse Russian nation, with its 190 ethnic groups and 89 regions, is a complex tapestry. 21 of these regions are self-governing ethnic republics, such as Tatarstan and Chechnya, with predominantly Muslim populations. The Kremlin's central control and resource distribution have created a fragile unity, with regions like Chechnya and Siberia existing as distinct worlds.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has exacerbated financial strains, with 56 regions facing budget deficits due to rising expenses and dwindling revenues. This has left little funding for essential public services, further highlighting the internal tensions within Russia.

But here's where it gets controversial: Is Rodionova's vision of dismantling Russia a realistic solution, or a radical idea that could spark further conflict? Could Russia's diverse regions truly thrive independently, or is unity under a reformed leadership a more viable path? The fate of Russia hangs in the balance, and the world watches with bated breath.
