In the heart of Hanoi's bustling urban landscape, where narrow alleyways weave a complex social fabric, ODDO Architects has crafted a remarkable extension to TH+ House, a testament to innovative design and thoughtful urban integration. This project, a continuation of their 2021 TH House, showcases a unique approach to architecture, where constraints become opportunities for social and spatial richness.
The studio's vision was to create a series of shared, flexible spaces that mirrored the vibrant community life of Hanoi's alleyways. By stacking these spaces around tall voids, they achieved a design that encourages social interaction and visual connections across floors. The central element of this design is a bright red steel support, which acts as both a structural backbone and a spatial organizer, allowing for larger openings and flexible layouts within the narrow urban footprint.
On the ground floor, the extension seamlessly integrates a new kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard with the existing dining area, all accessible via a wall of folding glass doors that open onto the adjacent alley. This design encourages a fluid movement between the interior and the vibrant street life outside.
Above, the living room, tea room, and new bedrooms are connected through internal windows and a bean-shaped opening, creating a visual link between the new and existing spaces. Perforated white-steel walkways, supported by exposed concrete floor plates and the central red-painted steel column, provide access to each level and allow natural light to filter through the interior.
The design philosophy behind this project is a response to the unique urban conditions of Hanoi. By treating the narrow alleyways as opportunities rather than limitations, ODDO Architects has created a space that is both functional and socially engaging. The use of dark stone floors and exposed concrete ceilings in the lower spaces contrasts with the warmer character of the upper levels, lined in timber panels.
This extension is a testament to the studio's ability to blend innovative design with a deep understanding of local culture and urban dynamics. It raises a deeper question about the potential for architecture to enhance social interactions and community life, especially in densely populated urban areas. What this project really suggests is that with careful consideration, even the most challenging urban constraints can become the foundation for vibrant, socially rich spaces.
ODDO Architects, with offices in Hanoi and Havirov, Czech Republic, is led by partners Nguyễn Đức Trung, Mai Lan Chi Obtulovičová, and Marek Obtulovič. Their work, including the CH House in Hanoi, has garnered recognition, including the emerging architecture studio of the year award in the 2021 Dezeen Awards. This latest project, TH+ House, further solidifies their reputation for creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply connected to their urban context.
